"Bahrain's senior Shia spiritual leader Ayatollah Sheikh Isa Qassim will complete a full year of siege on May 23rd," says Dr. Masoud Jahromi, former chair of the department of engineering at Ahlia University.

The authorities imposed the house arrest on Ayatollah Qassim after a brutal attack on the protesters rallying around his house, which left dozens killed and injured, and hundreds taken into custody.

In an interview with HCHR, Jahromi expressed concerns over Ayatollah Sheikh Isa Ahmed Qassim's health, saying "the health of Bahrain's top Shia cleric and leading figure has deteriorated and his life is in danger."
Since his house arrest, Qassim's family warned many times that the elderly sheikh is in urgent need of medical attention while the authorities have ignored sending medial assistance.

A 2016 court order also revoked Sheikh Qassim's citizenship, who is in his late 70s and was a leader of 2011 protests in the kingdom.

Jahromi called on the international community and right groups to break the silence on Sheikh Qassim's arrest and pressure the Al Khaliah regime to release him immediately.
