More than 20 Iranians in US prisons; Quds Day symbol of anti-Zionist movement: HR official

More than 20 Iranians in US prisons; Quds Day symbol of anti-Zionist movement: HR official
IRAN  - On a televised interview broadcast by IRIB on Friday, the Deputy of International Affairs to the Judiciary discussed the conditions of Iranian prisoners in the US and the importance of World Quds Day.

Quds Day is a symbol of protests against the grave violation of the Palestinian people's rights, and the reason we support oppressed nations of the region such as Yemen, Lebanon and Syria is that they have always been victims of western aggression like the one inflicted on Palestine, Bagheri said.

Although the annual demonstration of Quds Day has not been held today due to the spread of Covid-19, the approach Imam Khomeini has had towards the issue of Palestine is permanent and the anti-Zionist activities are continuous till the liberation of Palestine.

Mentioning that the resistance movement started in Lebanon, Bagheri said that the US and the Zionist regime has never been able to stop this movement as once they suddenly figured the movement has been spread all over the region, because, in fact, it is not a political movement but is a thought based on the identity of Muslim nations.

Speaking of the US illegal sanctions, the Secretary of High Council to Human Rights said that such sanctions began right after the victory of the Islamic Revolution and as western countries imposed sanctions on a particular industrial or military section and later they found that Iranians managed to manufacture the same sanctioned product, they switched sanctions on another section. Therefore, they started their paralyzing sanctions on necessary items in order to make us obey their unreasonable demands.

He also elaborated on the impracticability of the Instex mechanism since Europeans follow the US lead as they consider sale of petroleum as an act against the US sanctions and are not capable of offering a solution to facilitate the process of money transfer. I believe Europeans have a clear position and we cannot expect them to be useful as the Supreme Leader has already warned everyone not to be deceived by the neat appearance of Europeans behind the negotiation table and that we need to be aware of their real nature, Bagheri added.

"The attitude the judiciary has towards granting pardon to inmates is like that of a father towards his children and it is based on the Islamic principles our judiciary follows. The unprecedented innovation made by the Islamic Republic with respect to granting furlough to 115000 inmates and even providing a part of them with conditions to enjoy unconditional freedom caused the media in Britain, Italy and the US push their governments to take similar effective measures and learn a new approach towards dealing with prisoners during a crisis", the HR chief said.

Regarding Iranian prisoners in the US, Bagheri said that, at the time being, there are 20 Iranian prisoners in the US but the number of Iranian prisoners in the US who are also American citizens is higher than this. In addition to Dr. Asgari who has been already acquitted of baseless accusations and is still being held in US prisons for no good reason, there are other prisoners to whom we do not have access. During the meeting I had with the Swiss foreign affairs minister in Geneva, I told him that the Swiss embassy in Tehran has enough access to the information on American prisoners in Iran and you can visit them according to international regulations while the Pakistani embassy in the US does not provide us with such opportunities so that we can meet with Iranian prisoners in the US and defend their rights, the HCHR Secretary said. "Protecting the rights of Iranians either in Iran or abroad is our duty since they are Iranian citizens and even if they have committed a crime they had better do their time in Iran so that their families would be able to make visits to them".

With respect to the coronavirus crisis, Bagheri made a comparison between Iran and European countries saying that even though they have much more equipment, Iran managed the crisis much more effectively by providing people with free medical care which is not found anywhere in the world. Besides, the religious capacities in our country acted as a big aid to the public under the existing circumstances affected by cruel sanctions, he added.
