UNODC praised Iran’s efforts to combat drugs
IRAN  - In a meeting held between the Secretary of High Council for Human Rights and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Representative in Iran, Alexander Fedulov, Ali Bagheri Kani mentioned that Iran has borders with the biggest producer of Narcotics in the world and since some western countries refuse to provide our country with necessary equipment for fighting against drug trafficking, we believe that they not only are not willing to seriously face this problem, but also they make profit out of the sales and distribution of drugs.

"Many Iranians have been martyred in the fight against drug trafficking, therefore, we expect the UN not to remain silent and take effective measures in order for the related sanctions to be lifted", Bagheri added.

Stressing that the occupation of Afghanistan by the US has caused the drug production to become 50 times bigger than before the occupation, the Deputy of International Relations to the Judiciary said that despite of the obstacles put by western countries on our way, Iran has remarkably become stronger in different fields such as the intelligent service, police and judicial aspects of this battle field.

Mentioning common aspects of cooperation between Iran and the UNODC, Kani also said that preventive measures play an effective role in Iran's judicial policies and cooperation in this respect is always welcome by Iran.

Bagheri-kani noted Iran's initiative to grant exemption and furlough to one hundred thousand inmates.

"The furlough for more than 100,000 prisoners shows Iran has respect for the human dignity and the country's judicial system believes that the criminals should return to the society."

Alexander Fedulov praised Iran's efforts to combat drugs. "I myself strongly believe that the best actions in fighting drugs have been done in Iran and the Islamic Republic should be appreciated for its efforts."

He noted "many legal and judicial opportunities of cooperation" that that the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has and stressed that the office is open to mutual plans.
