UN Security Council holds back on blaming Iran in Saudi oil attacks

UN Security Council holds back on blaming Iran in Saudi oil attacks
IRAN  - The attacks on Saudi Arabia's oil refineries have been discussed at a United Nations Security Council meeting, where the UN envoy for Yemen was giving a scheduled briefing.

Members of the UN Security Council have condemned Saturday's attacks on oil facilities in Saudi Arabia.

The attacks set off explosions and fires on Saturday at two sites in the kingdom, including what is said to be one of the largest crude oil plants in the world.

While the new US ambassador made it clear that Washington believes the Houthis did not stage the attacks alone, other members did not apportion blame.

The new US ambassador to the UN, Kelly Craft, said Washington "condemns these attacks in the strongest possible terms" and urged other delegates to be "clear-eyed" about the incident which she called "a direct assault on the world energy supply."

She reiterated US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's statement that "there is no evidence that the attacks came from Yemen" and "emerging information indicates that responsibility lies with Iran."

Russia's UN ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said that the international community should not rush to conclusions. He expressed concern that similar incidents may provoke larger conflicts in the region.
