Iranian activists to sue US over human costs of sanctions

Iranian activists to sue US over human costs of sanctions
IRAN  - Iranian Human Rights NGO is trying to file lawsuits against the US over the effects of illegal sanctions.

According to the Iran's Code of Civil Procedure, natural persons are able to file a lawsuit against another country if they are damaged physically or financially by foreign governments, a leading student human rights institute Sohlhe Ziba told HCHR website.

"Based on international human rights instruments and conventions, Iranian children's rights are violated and their medical needs are targeted by the US cruel sanctions. We have decided to open a case in Iran's domestic courts so the judiciary could evaluate the damage caused by the sanctions based on the evidence provided by the Iranian government", Sakineh Pod, a senior lawyer at Solh-e-Ziba added.

The same procedure exists in the US laws as individuals are able to file a lawsuit against another country in the US courts and the verdict issued by the court will be executed by the US government against the defendant.

Since pulling out of a nuclear deal, the U.S. government has reinstated a series of tough sanctions on Iran, interrupting humanitarian supplies, including medicine.

The United Nations‘highest court has ordered the United States to lift sanctions on Iran that affect imports of humanitarian goods and products and services linked to the safety of civil aviation; however, the US government has refused to do so.
