HR advocates worried about Zakzaky’s health

HR advocates worried about Zakzaky’s health
IRAN  - In a phone conversation with Iran's ambassador to Nigeria, the deputy for international affairs at Solh-e Ziba human rights institute, Saman Niyazi, expressed his worries about Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky's conditions; saying that human rights bodies are worried about his health and hope that Iran would take diplomatic measures in this regard.

Zakzaky, the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, has been in detention since December 2015 after his residence in the city of Zaria was raided by Nigeria's forces, during which he was beaten and lost his left eye.

Solh-e Zibam, a leading student human rights institute, has recently written to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and called on the world body to provide the ground for the freedom and treatment of top Muslim cleric Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky who has been kept in prison by the Nigerian government for the past four years.

Morteza Rahimi, the Iranian ambassador to Nigeria also said that the Iranian embassy in Nigeria has taken effective steps and has talked to different bodies in this regard. As a result, the Nigerian officials have provided al-Zakzaky and his wife a medical team so that they would be treated out of Nigeria upon the medical team's recommendation. Based on the published information, the medical team has submitted its report and Mr. Zakzaky's lawyers are working on it and they will deliver it to the court.

"Zakzaky's lawyers and his son are making great attempts to facilitate the process so he would be released and would be able to move abroad in order to receive medical treatment and we hope that this occurs in the near future", Rahimi added.

In 2016, Nigeria's federal high court ordered Zakzaky's unconditional release from jail following a trial. Most recently, his son Mohammad said the authorities were determined to take the cleric's life by exposing him to toxic material.
