Al Khalifa military courts hold trial for Bahraini youth

Al Khalifa military courts hold trial for Bahraini youth
World  - Bahrain's Human Rights Association has reported on the third trial session for nine Bahraini youths at the Al Khalifa military court.

The Association published in a fresh statement that these young people had made presence at the court with weak and emaciated bodies as a result of intense torture, solitary confinement and inhuman treatment. "what happened to these detainees marks a serious violation of human rights and foreshadows a disaster in cases related to freedom of speech and peaceful gatherings in the future since some they are being dealt with in military courts."

Bahrain's Human Rights Association adds that the trial, which marks the first military trial of civilians following an approval issued by Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, contains several instances violations of Article 14 of of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights on guarantee of fair trial including confidentiality of court hearings, the court's refusal to ask the lawyers to file a case as well as preventing defendants from elaborating on the torture they experienced during interrogations.

The body has stated that the solitary confinement of four defendants, which lasted 13 months in two cases, is contrary to the basic principles of engagement with detainees. Additionally, opposition to examination of defendants by the forensics remains contrary to the criminal laws of Bahrain.
