- Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili says the promotion of strategic relations between Tehran and Moscow will serve the interests of regional nations.
"The strategic cooperation between Tehran and Moscow has the potential to align the balance of power with the interests of regional nations," Jalili said in a Thursday meeting with Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev.
"Iran-Russia constructive interaction will result in regional stability and security," he added on the sidelines of the third annual international conference of high-ranking security officials in St. Petersburg.
Patrushev, for his part, made a reference to the variety of areas for cooperation between Tehran and Moscow, and said the emergence of new issues in the international arena has reinforced the necessity for further consultations and cooperation between the two countries.
Jalili and Patrushev also attended the first meeting of the security council secretaries of the Caspian Sea littoral states on Thursday.
In the meeting, Jalili called for devising a mechanism among the five littoral states to help lay the groundwork for multilateral cooperation and provide defense against joint threats.
Undoubtedly any foreign interference in this body of water will bring about unexpected potential and concrete threats to the security and interests of the littoral states, he said.
Patrushev also said that issues related to the Caspian Sea needed to be resolved by littoral states, rejecting any foreign meddling in the sea affairs.
Jalili, heading a delegation, arrived in Russia on Thursday to take part in St. Petersburg international security conference.
The security conference, which began on Thursday, will discuss information security, international energy security as well as the fight against piracy.
Security officials from more than 70 countries and international organizations are participating in the two-day conference.
The Saint Petersburg meeting is the third international security conference hosted by Russia.
The first and the second meetings were held in the cities of Sochi and Yekaterinburg in 2010 and 2011 respectively.
